How does one choose which programming language to choose?

I know nothing of the capabilities of any program language so how does one choose to purchase a programming language for the first time? Again, thanks for all the help!

How does one choose which programming language to choose?
Well it depends what you need it for really, java is a good web based language, while c++ is the best for robust programs, such as games, or programs that require the use of enormous databases, while visual basic is the easiest and best for rapid development. Also the guy above is correct, you buy the development software, but you could find some for free on the internet, such as java, it is free, and a good IDE is Eclipse, search for it ;).
Reply:You cant purchase a language! LOL

One normally goes about this the opposite way:

1 Decide what capabilities/features do you desire

2. Find the best Language for the job

3. Purchase the tools required and gain necessary skillz

If in doubt I say pick c++, it's considered both useful and elegant, you'll learn it the right way when you start off and you can literally do anything with it.

I wish I could say it was my fist language!

Plus its syntax(sorta like a style) has been borrowed for many other languages so without too much effort you'll also be able to read java javascript and many others.
Reply:When you setup this programe you can to choose the language...if you want to choose any language when you install any programe you can to download you're language of internet and after that update you're programe ..
Reply:Here are the things for you to consider when choosing a programming language.

1. Community Support.

If you're thinking of learning .NET, then perhaps you should also think about 3 or 5 years from now. Will Microsoft still support it? Or will they release a spanking new technology that's gonna kill their own product. Just think about where are the Foxpro, J++, Visual Basic programmers now. The languages that are thriving right now because of rich community support from the open-source community and from big companies such as IBM, Sun, and Oracle are Java, Ruby, C++, Phyton, %26amp; PHP.

2. Platform

Are you programming on Windows, Mac, Linux, or Solaris? or all?

3. Tools %26amp; Frameworks

You can never finish a software in the least possible time if you are coding in Notepad and with no framework to help you. Tools and frameworks make the programmer's life much much easier. Case in point, how can you do unit and regression testing of your code in Notepad?

4. Job Opportunity

It's always nice if your IT skills is always in demand. That could only mean big bucks for you.
