How can I get into computer programming?

I've asked several programmers and they keep telling me to teach myself. I am not the study-at-home type. I need a teacher and deadlines. Should I check out colleges? tech schools?

How can I get into computer programming?
yeah school is the way to go....comp sci isn't exactly the easiest major so be prepared for some real work...

you could also look for tutors to get into the basics....check out craigslist in your area, i'm sure there's tons of tutors maybe someone could start you out with some basics
Reply:I've been a programmer for 10 years. Before I started school, I asked everyone I knew who was a programmer, what school they went to. I soon realized who had the best reputation. Personally, I don't recommend technical schools. Go to an accredited college. In the long run they look better on your resume, are less expensive (at least in my state), and will teach you everything you need to know. They have job referrals too. Like you, I work best with a teacher, deadlines, etc.
Reply:Yes, you should check colleges. Computer Science is a major by its own.

You should be acknowledged though that in order to become a successful programmer you must be willing to learn by yourself. University courses give you the basis of the theoretical knowledge, so be prepared to teach yourself how to teach yourself.

This is not as hard as it sounds, even if you think you're not the "study-at-home type". If you are willing, I'm sure you can do it (you have to like though).
Reply:Colleges and tech schools are your best bet if you need a classroom environment.
Reply:if u arent a self learner u cant be a good programmer.
