How did you overcome your social programming?

What ideas did you hold as beliefs until you were smart enough to gather data on your own and come to your own conclusions?

How did you overcome your social programming?
You have to realize that I CAN"T really means I AM NOT WILLING TO......

You have to realize that 90% of tha obstacles you face are the ones you put there yourself (usually by making excuses).....

You realize that not everything is all about you, but rather what you are willing to give.....

You realize that you wouldn't worry so much about what others thought of you if you found out how seldom they actually did....

You realize that all people crave acceptance, appreciation, admiration and approval from other people (they just have different ways they go about getting it)......

You realize that almost everything is a choice, that you are not a victim, and that you are in control of your behavior....

You realize that each obstacle you face has 3 opportunities hiding behind it (1-to overcome, 2- to learn something, 3-to improve something).....

You realize that emotionally driven behavior and decisions are usually bad ones, and you choose to remain objective....

When you start to grow empathy, and learn to consider the points of view of other people, and you give that some weight....

When you begin to understand that all people have self-preservation tendencies (to feel that they are right, justified, blameless, their point of view is correct, and their priorities trump those of others) and seek to overcome those self-preservation tendencies....
Reply:Wiping the old hard rive clean, rebooting, then doing some intensive personal re-programming.

In essence thinking for oneself, not being afraid to think differently, and facing the truth not matter how much it may hurt at first.

Change is always painful. If you have the desire to find the truth no matter what, you will find it.
Reply:I cannot put a time or place on the overcoming... I have always been someone who goes left when the whole crowd goes right. Where it came from, I have no clue. All I know is that it works well for me and many wish they were doing it to but they fail to take the first step.
Reply:You need to get exposed to other cultures as much as you can. (Note! not everything in your original social programming is bad :))
Reply:That sociology was a real science.
Reply:Never stand in front of a crowd when standing, don't be the last one in line when everyone else is running.
Reply:I overcame my social programming by traveling extensively.

Trust me, it works.

Reply:It could be social programming or it could be an immature ego (ego = "reality testing principle"). If I believe I can fly, that will eventually be contradicted by reality. If others (ie social programming) tell me that Santa exists, my developed ego will eventually realize the belief as unrealistic. As for my own beliefs, I once believed what I was told, that if I put salt on a bird's tail that it could not fly away. That idea simply became unrealistic at some stage.
