What is the best programming language and book that covers it to introduce a 10 year old to the art?

Software too, of course.

I do a little VB myself, but I want to get my child into it with a more versatile and kid friendly, less bad habit forming approach.

how about scratch developed by MIT for children to use and learn programming languages get it here at http://scratch.mit.edu/ it is fun and it gets the children started :)
Reply:I was tutoring a 7 year old a few years ago. My only job was to get him interested in learning again...since the school kind of sucked him dry of that.

One thing I did was teach him some HTML. I started with just basic stuff - how to set the background and fonts, how to add pictures, how to do some effects that most of us would find annoying (but he thought it was cool that he could scroll text across the screen).

HTML may be a good way to start him. Teach him a little easy JavaScript as well once he gets good at the HTML. I know HTML isn't a "programming language," but its a good place to start. And once he gets into JavaScript, he'll begin to understand the basics of programming and can go from there if he's interested to learn more.

Just a thought!

Reply:How about KPL. It's specifically for kids. I know nothing about it, so I can't give any opinions, just thought I'd mention it.
