When do I get to make cool things with programming?

I mean I'm learning computer programming, and we're stuck at solving elaborate math problems. MATLAB and Fortran both! Now I'm in a class on Java and when do I get to learn to make the cool stuff! Like games and other apps. I mean I'm at the point where...kasuubdkds

Please enlighten me. I'm frustrated. Computer Programming has become boring. When will it get more fun?

When do I get to make cool things with programming?
Oh dude it takes forever. It took me years to get to the point where I could actually do a lot of cool stuff. Best advice is to just hang in there, and cope the best you can with the boring learning stuff you're doing now... it will get better
Reply:Why not come up with a project for yourself? You'll definitely get to a point where you will have to hit the books and learn stuff on your own, but why not? Try making a text-based game, like "Enter 1 to... Enter 2 to ...." etc.

Expand from there!
Reply:The fun stuff really starts when you are working on something that you really want to create, not something you are assigned to do for the company you are working for (or the class you are in).

While I work full time doing programming all day long, the most fun I have is at night after work doing my own stuff.
Reply:The cool stuff happens after about 10 years of experience. i hate to be a downer, but it's true.
Reply:Yeh, the theory can get tedious, but it will teach you the principles behide your code. Alot of gaming code is very complicated and mathematically based due to graphics, speed, user interaction, many things. Now that you're learning java, you can concentrate on the object orientated aspects.

As you gain experience, you can utilize many libraries that take out some of the tedious/repetitive aspects. But in order to use them, you really should know what they're doing and be able to adapt them to your application.

It's worth the ramp up time - it's a very creative field and you can concentrate on the things you enjoy doing with it once you do have the basics down. The best of luck - just a little time!
